The Trasimeno Regional Archaeological Project will begin its eight season of field work in the territory of Castiglione del Lago with a new series of excavations on the south slope of Castiglione del Lago. The site, which has never been systematically excavated, encompasses at least four terraces below the medieval walls of Castiglione del Lago. Visible Roman remains a series of arches/niches that support the terrace above and a return wall that enclosed a channel for directing water from a source above. The first impression of this structure suggests that this structure was designed as a water feature, perhaps a nymphaeum.
Twenty-two students are joining our six-week field school. As the excavations get under way we will update our blog.
